Halloween doubles kids’ risk of being hit, coalition warns. Here’s what you can do

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Safe Kids Alaska Coalition has revealed that children face double the risk of being hit by vehicles while walking on Halloween compared to any other day of the year. Sara Penisten Turcic, a registered nurse at Providence Alaska Medical Center and the state coalition coordinator, emphasized that this statistic is rooted in national data, although local statistics in Alaska are not significantly high.

Penisten Turcic noted that excited trick-or-treaters combined with distracted drivers contribute to these incidents. Specific challenges in Alaska include neighborhoods lacking street lights and sidewalks, which complicate visibility. To improve safety, she urges parents to ensure their children are highly visible, suggesting they wear reflective materials and be accompanied by responsible adults. The coalition also distributes reflective gear, and drivers are reminded to be especially vigilant on Halloween night. Additional costume safety tips aim to mitigate hazards related to length and visibility.
