ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Karin Johnson, the co-owner of Dark Horse Coffee Company situated in downtown Anchorage, reported that during the week of the Elders and Youth Conference and the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention, their coffee shop experienced an exceptionally busy period. The family-owned business, conveniently located across from the Dena’ina Center, offered all customers free coffee and food for six days thanks to a political action committee dedicated to promoting voter engagement.
Johnson shared that she was approached by a representative from the PAC seeking a creative method to spread their message about voting. Instead of traditional advertising, the committee chose to treat attendees at the convention. Employees naturally informed customers about the importance of voting, directing many to City Hall for more information. Throughout the event, the shop was bustling, with patrons expressing gratitude for the service and some even opting to leave tips. Johnson chose not to disclose the name of the PAC or the funds involved but expressed how fulfilling the experience was for her and her team.
