Commentary: Cook Inlet’s gas shortage has become Fairbanks’ diesel bill

On October 12, Golden Valley Electric Association (GVEA) urged its members to conserve electricity and brace for potential power outages. This call for action followed a unit’s unplanned shutdown at the North Pole Power Plant, compounded by scheduled maintenance, significantly reducing available generation capacity.

With a cold winter approaching and electricity rates having exceeded 37 cents per kilowatt-hour, the situation has caused anxiety among Interior residents about the reliability of their power supply. Questions arise regarding the Alaska Intertie, a system established to connect the Interior to Southcentral utilities, and the ability to import lower-cost electricity, including production from the Bradley Lake Hydroelectric Project. However, due to a gas supply shortage in Cook Inlet, GVEA has become increasingly dependent on more expensive local generation, escalating the financial burden on residents, with rates now substantially higher than those in other regions.
