“Sloppy is the way I would describe this approach”: Unknown plans for an underwater data center in Cook Inlet

In Anchorage, Alaska, a new entity, DeepGreen Cook Inlet SPV, has suggested an innovative underwater data center, marking the first such proposal in the state. This initiative has surprised local officials and sparked significant concerns regarding the existing lack of regulations governing data centers, particularly in light of potential environmental effects on endangered species such as the Cook Inlet Beluga whale.

Mayor Peter Micciche of Kenai Peninsula Borough expressed his unease, stating he hasn’t received any communication from DeepGreen, which leaves him in the dark about a project that could considerably impact the offshore environment. He described the approach as ‘sloppy’ and criticized the lack of oversight as the state grapples with the technological advancements in the industry.” He also emphasized the need for legislative action to establish formal regulations for new technologies operating on Alaska’s public lands and waters.
