ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – With a fresh layer of snow visible at Kincaid Park, members of Anchorage’s Nordic skiing community are excited for the upcoming skiing season. The Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage (NSAA) held its annual Ski Swap on Saturday, which is considered a launch point for winter activities.
“Today is kind of the kickoff for ski season,” noted Lauri Bassett, NSAA volunteer coordinator, expressing hope for more snow soon. A new entry system was implemented this year, allowing participants to take a number instead of standing in long lines. Inside the venue, attendees found a diverse range of skis, boots, poles, and winter apparel.
Zak Hammill, director of NSAA’s ski jumping program, shared his thoughts on the community, saying, “It’s a really tight-knit group.” He emphasized how skiing adds joy to Alaska’s long winters. Bassett added that the event is also welcoming for newcomers, reflecting on how some have moved to Anchorage specifically for its ski community.
