ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Aliy Zirkle, a respected veteran of the Iditarod, was recently honored with induction into the Iditarod Hall of Fame, marking the end of her impressive two-decade career. Throughout her time in the sport, Zirkle achieved three second-place finishes and received six Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Awards, recognizing her exemplary care for dogs.

In her final race in 2021, intended as a ceremonial farewell, Zirkle encountered a serious accident when her sled tipped, causing her to strike her head against the ice. After managing to reach the checkpoint, she was subsequently medevaced to Anchorage due to a traumatic brain injury. For five years following this incident, Zirkle had not publicly discussed the event until now, expressing gratitude to the Alaska Air National Guard first responders who played a crucial role in her recovery. In an interview featured on “AK Sports Shorts” at the Beartooth Theatre, she reflects on this experience and the reasons behind sharing her story at this time.
