ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – For Wilson Lawson and his fellow 22 seniors on the Lathrop Malemutes football team, Saturday’s game against Soldotna held more significance than merely a state championship title. Throughout their high school careers, they faced the Stars annually, enduring heartbreak each time.
This season, thanks in large part to Lawson, the outcome was notably different. The standout wide receiver recorded 289 receiving yards and four touchdowns, leading a formidable aerial attack that resulted in a decisive 35-14 victory, marking Soldotna’s most significant loss since 2006.
“It’s a blessing,” Lawson remarked following the game. “We worked really hard for it, I feel like we’re well-deserved. We deserved it.” His coach, Luke Balash, praised Lawson as a “tremendously gifted athlete,” recognizing his selflessness throughout the season, even in games where he received limited passes. Lathrop finished the season undefeated at 10-0, with Lawson closing his high school chapter on a high note. “I just want to thank God, thank my family, thank my team, the coaching staff, everyone,” he stated. “This was a lovely season. I loved it.”
