Mammo Mixers: Turning Mammograms into Community Support

In Anchorage, Alaska, Imaging Associates is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month by organizing ‘Mammo mixers’ multiple times this October. These events aim to provide not only mammograms but also community support and snacks to ease the anxiety often associated with the screening process. Kelsey Cain, a physician assistant at Imaging Associates, emphasized the importance of support, particularly for those who may receive abnormal results and need further imaging or a biopsy.

At each mixer, groups of 8–12 women experience the event together, with some going for their mammograms in pairs while others learn about breast cancer prevention and enjoy refreshments. Cain noted that one in eight women will face a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Former Olympic skier and breast cancer survivor Kikkan Randall, who was diagnosed at 35, underscored the significance of early detection and the supportive nature of these mixers, which bring women together to face their fears regarding screenings.
