Barbara Haney: Assess the Air Quality Monitor Before North Pole is Charged
In a previous discussion, I argued that the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) should thoroughly review the costs and implications for North Pole before implementing any air quality area divisions.

In a previous discussion, I argued that the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) should thoroughly review the costs and implications for North Pole before implementing any air quality area divisions. Recent developments have led me to question the integrity of the monitoring system that supports North Pole’s air quality data.
DEC’s latest regulatory package, released on October 25, primarily focuses on Anchorage but also includes significant amendments for North Pole. It introduces the Quality Assurance Project Plan essential for the calibration and management of air monitors, raising concerns about the reliability of the data impacting air quality designations and regulations in the area.
As North Pole’s air quality is determined largely by the Hurst Road monitoring site, which has been cited for its high PM2.5 readings, it is crucial to scrutinize both the siting and the operational effectiveness of the monitors used. The findings suggest that public trust hinges on enhanced transparency and reliable data as the state considers creating separate regulations for the region.
The community now faces urgent power supply challenges, with potential controlled outages impacting heating options, further complicating the situation. Clear regulations around power outages and air quality monitoring must be established ahead of harsh winter conditions to protect residents.

Question: Where are the air monitors placed? Usually they are placed at the area of highest concentration of particulate matter and noxious gases. This is done purposely to skew and drive the numbers up. A Democrat’s old trick in order to get the attention they want. And, the funding they want.
