New Magazine Supports Cultural Learning for Alaska Native Youth

New monthly magazine aims to help Alaska Native children learn more about their culture

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Lexi Trainer, the founder of Yaaruin Kids, is passionate about her Cu’pik and Yu’pik heritage. Raised in Chevak, a village in Western Alaska, Trainer experienced traditional activities like berry picking and fish camp summers. After her son Max was born in Anchorage in 2025, she realized the importance of sharing these cultural experiences with him. “Even though we live in the city now, I want my son to have that same experience,” she expressed.

Recognizing that her son was not alone in needing this cultural connection, Trainer decided to create the magazine, which includes games, puzzles, and regional activities from Alaska’s five main areas. The first issue features a traditional recipe for Akutaq and a word or phrase of the month in various languages. While aimed primarily at youth, Trainer noted that adults also find it helpful for their learning journeys. Subscriptions are available for $149.99 per year, with deliveries starting in January. A launch party is set for Nov. 14 at the Loussac Library from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., featuring activities and a traditional storyteller.
