During a joint meeting of the state House and Senate Resource Committees on August 20, 2026, Alaska Department of Natural Resources Commissioner John Crowther faced scrutiny regarding a proposed no-cost transfer of 20,000 acres in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough to the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA). This transfer, aimed at creating a multi-use industrial and energy development district, has raised legal concerns about whether such a move serves a sufficient public or charitable purpose.
Senate Majority Leader Cathy Giessel expressed apprehension over the increase in no-cost land transfers, highlighting the potential financial losses if these lands could have been leased for substantial revenue. Crowther acknowledged that a final decision on the Mat-Su proposal could emerge before a new governor takes office December 7, 2026, but warned that any decision could face judicial review. A lawsuit filed on October 22 in state Superior Court claims the proposal is unconstitutional, aiming to stall the transfer during the transition of governors.
