ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has noted an increase in reports concerning moose interacting with pumpkins and Halloween decorations as the holiday approaches. According to Cory Stantorf from the department, moose are often spotted in front yards, consuming pumpkins during this time of year when moose activity peaks.
Alongside their attraction to pumpkins, moose can become tangled in Halloween decorations, garden hoses, and other items. Currently, moose are nearing the end of their rutting season, which alters their behavior. During this period, Stantorf indicated that bull moose are prone to sparring with various objects, including Halloween decorations. Additionally, pumpkins can be harmful to moose, leading to serious health issues if ingested. The department advises residents to place pumpkins outdoors only on Halloween and to remove them quickly afterward.
