ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – An orphaned walrus calf, discovered alone near Point Lay, is set to move to SeaWorld Orlando after being cared for at the Alaska SeaLife Center. The male calf was spotted by U.S. Geological Survey biologist Tony Fischbach alongside Ilisaġvik College student Violet Anniskett while they were documenting walrus activities in the area. They had been gathering samples related to harmful algal toxins when they noticed the calf.
Anniskett, who is a local resident, grew attached to the calf, naming him Annautaq after her father’s Iñupiaq name. The young walrus relied on their companionship during a storm, unable to sleep without one of them nearby. Annautaq has now recovered at the center, but authorities confirmed he cannot be released into the wild. He is being relocated to SeaWorld Orlando to join other walruses, including Uki, who was rescued in 2024. At SeaWorld, Annautaq will receive intensive care and companionship as he adjusts to his new environment.
