ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game successfully captured a brown bear cub on Thursday afternoon after it had been evading biologists for an entire month. Biologist Nick Docken expressed gratitude to the public for their assistance, noting that many reached out regularly for updates on the cub’s condition.
The cub had been wandering around Anchorage following the removal of its mother and sibling due to their repeated incursions into garbage in a Lake Otis area. Despite continued encounters with trash, biologists found the cub to be in good health, although it may face difficulties surviving the winter without maternal care, as brown bear cubs typically stay with their mothers for two years. Following its capture, the cub was recovering from anesthesia when keeper Sarah Smith indicated the possible reunion with its sibling at the Alaska zoo.
