Could seeing a pink fire engine save lives? Here’s why the Anchorage Fire Department thinks so

In Anchorage, Alaska, the local fire department features a distinctive pink fire engine, Miss Carol, designed to attract attention and raise awareness about breast cancer. Jason Dolph, AFD Safety Officer, noted that this unconventional color choice is intended to make people pause and consider health screenings, which are crucial for early cancer detection.

Dolph’s personal connection to the cause is profound; his mother, Linda, succumbed to breast cancer after being diagnosed at an advanced stage. He emphasizes the importance of early detection, recalling how his mother hadn’t seen a doctor in 25 years. The fire engine was officially converted to pink in August 2014, and it serves across the city, especially in October, to promote awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As Miss Carol approaches retirement in 2028, Dolph expresses hope for future pink fire engines to continue the mission without using taxpayer dollars.
