Remote site of Parks Hwy crash that killed 2 highlights risks of isolated stretches of road, Fairbanks fire chief says

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) – Following a tragic head-on accident on the Parks Highway that claimed the lives of a Fairbanks couple and left their young child injured, first responders are highlighting the inherent dangers of Alaska’s remote roads. Around 9 a.m. on Monday, 38-year-old Sasha Hart crossed into oncoming traffic near Trapper Creek and collided with a northbound truck. Sasha and her husband, 41-year-old David Hart, died at the scene, while their toddler was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and later flown to Anchorage.

Fairbanks Fire Chief Andrew Coccaro emphasized the challenges posed by the remote accident site, which lies equidistant between Anchorage and Fairbanks, far from essential medical services. He cautioned drivers against complacency due to the road’s isolation, emphasizing that even routine trips can lead to severe consequences. Coccaro also discussed the sensitive protocols followed when children survive such incidents, highlighting that help must be provided while delicately handling communication about the loss of a parent.
